‘It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era - the kind of peak that never comes again.’

Review: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas – Hunter S Thompson

OK, before I write this review I want to state that I haven’t seen the film, and I had really very little idea what the book was all about when I read it. I decided to read it purely based on a (I now think very random) Amazon recommendation, and to begin with, I really didn’t enjoy it at all!

The book basically concerns a reporter and his lawyer, who take a road trip to Las Vegas planning to cover a sporting event. What they actually do is embark on a mad drugs binge, spiralling round the city, barely in control. The narrative is written from the perspective of someone under the influence of a number of hallucinatory substances, and as such it’s confused and fragmented from the start. It’s sometimes difficult to tell the difference between what is real and what is occurring inside the narrator’s mind. This is a clever trope, but it makes it very difficult to decipher any real story.

If you do decide to read this, bear in mind that what it really does is study the ‘American dream’, showing that the two – who claim to be looking for the American dream throughout the novel – are actually using drugs to escape from the difficulties and the mundane tasks of their lives. It’s interesting, but it really isn’t a plot – it’s an experience. The parts I really did enjoy were those that described the world at that time – the hippies, and the movements, and the music.  When I finished the book, I still wasn’t sure I liked it, but it certainly made me think a lot.

Has anyone read this book or seen the film? What did you think?
