Cookie & Pickle

Say hello to my little friends!

So a bit of back story: as a child, we really didn't have pets much. At one point my parents caved and allowed me and my sister to get a hamster. It was called Nibbles, because when we saw it, it was biting on everything in the cage. I'm not sure entirely why this didn't spark warning bells, because it was quite a bitey hamster, but we loved it all the same! However, we very much didn't live up to our end of the bargain with my mum, with our promises to clean it and feed it and save up our pocket money to buy it things all falling by the wayside pretty quickly, so when it died a few years later we weren't allowed a replacement. Apart from a few paltry fish, that's my whole experience with pets. But now, about a month after moving into a place of my own, I found myself wandering into a pet shop...and emerging half an hour later, slightly stunned, carrying a gerbilarium.

Pickle (the ginger one on the left, my boyfriend's choice) and Cookie (mine, the little fat brown one) have spent their first few days skipping around their cage and eating almost everything we put in it, including the box they sleep in, their bedding (which does look like Lucky Charms, so maybe that's why they're confused) and all their food (mine has barely left the food bowl - like owner, like pet?!)

I won't coo over them too much more because I know it's boring when people rave on about their pets and also some people and presumably thinking 'Ew! Rodents!' but they really are so cute. They're really tame, don't bite and happily run about on our laps/the sofa when we sit watching TV.

Does anyone else have gerbils? Got any tips for a new gerbil owner?!

  1. fancy showing me these two cuties...I want to get some myself now! :) Thanks for sharing my lovely xx

  2. omg they're sooo cute, I want one! or five hahaha

    Roses are bluee ♡

  3. Oh my goodness, they're so cute! I used to have pet rats. I know some people are going to think that's weird, but they were the sweetest things ever! I hope you have lots of fun with your gerbils! :)

  4. It's not boring when you ramble on about pets. I think they're adorable!

  5. They both are so cute! I've got a dwarf hamster named Basse :-)

  6. I love Gerbils, always had them as a child and a few years ago I decided it was time they were in my life again! I brought two boys, Fudge and Pickles (great minds). Unfortunately Pickles has now passed on :( but Fudge is still loving life.
Gerbils enjoy nibbling away so I always give them cereal boxes and any old bits of cardboard I have. Also rodent chocolate drops are a big treat, they love them!
Thanks for sharing and have a lovely time with your new family members :)

  7. Gerbils are my favourite little critters! They have such individual personalities. I used to have Blossom and Petal, who both sadly passed this year. They were so sweet! Definitely keep hold of any used toilet rolls...they will happily chew away.
