I think if I could pick one era to grow up in, it would be the swinging sixties in London. I know that in reality it probably wasn’t as glamorous as it looks, and I’m not one of those girls who goes around saying wistfully ‘I was born in the wrong time,’ but I am just in love with the free spirited fashion of that era. Twiggy came to epitomise that whole look, and I have always wanted to emulate her make up – in particular the huge eyes with long, black eyelashes.
I have tried just about every mascara in the world, including ones called ‘retro’ and so on, and none of them give that proper, doll-eyed effect. I put more on, but that just meant I got mascara all over my face! False eyelashes sorted out the top eyelashes but I still couldn’t figure out how to get the bottom lashes right. I was starting to think Twiggy must’ve just had freakishly good eyelashes until I read an article where she said ‘oh, I just drew them on with eyeliner.’ I mentioned this to my mum in astonishment and she just looked at me like, well, of course, you idiot. But I never knew!
This isn’t even a tutorial because it’s the simplest trick in the entire world – all you do is literally take a liquid eyeliner (I used the Soap & Glory Supercat eyeliner pen, which is just a felt tip for your eyes and makes it really easy) and instead of drawing a line under your eye, do little dots instead. A couple of coats of mascara (I used Benefit They’re Real), et voila, instant Twiggy eyelashes. I winged out my top lash eyeliner as well to add to the effect.
I would say this look works well provided you’re not planning on sweating a lot because, obviously, eyeliner can move, and you don’t want to look like you’ve got two bruises under your eyes – so it’s maybe not a clubbing look, or for the heat of summer – but otherwise, I think it’s so pretty and makes eyes look huge!
What do you think of my attempt? (Sorry for the pretentious photos – taking photos of your eyes is quite hard, and all my close ups looked insane!) Let me know if you try it out!
