May is my favourite month of the year. It’s my birthday, and it’s filled with bank holidays and those long, perfect days when the sun finally starts to shake off the shackles of winter and London slowly begins to come to life again. I like the changing of seasons and the way everything feels fresh and new. I like stepping outside in a light cardigan and feeling warm air on my skin, sitting in pub gardens late into the evening, reading on my balcony, picnics in the park, eating dinner outside with my boyfriend and talking about nothing until it gets too dark to see. London, and even England itself, is a better place in the summer, a place smelling of fresh grass with little chirpy birds and melting ice cream, boys in polo shirts and girls in summer dresses. This May in particular was just so good for me – here’s hoping June can live up to it!
In the meantime, some little life loves…
In the summer I just want to look natural. But I mean, like, Alexa Chung natural, not what my face naturally looks like because that would scare people and no one would hang out with me anymore. (I went through this weird phase a few years back of not wearing any make up at all. I literally don’t know how, or in fact why I did it). I’ve repurchased the 24 Hour Maybelline foundation which I mentioned in my last favourites post (I’m in the colour ‘Sand,’ for thoe asking) – it’s nice, I prefer a matte finish and this gives that sort of ‘not an oil slick’ type look that I love. Plus, it’s like £8. As it’s been a pretty heavy month I’ve been using the Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer under my eyes to take me from looking like a weird raccoon to normal person in under a minute!
I love bronzer in the summer. I am quite olive skinned naturally and I tan quickly so I find it just emphasises that, but I like to keep it quite matte again or it can look a bit disco ball. My friend bought me this amazing Benefit bronzer kit for my birthday and I’ve been using it constantly – it has the Hula bronzer, which I love, and a really natural highlight and eye/brow colour, as well as the Hula lip balm which has a gold finish – it’s quite unusual but quite cool. The Maybelline colour tattoo eyeshadows - I know I bang on about them but they're a godsend in the summer. They just don't come off or crease. I've been using the rose gold and pomegranate colours lately.
Blush wise, I like cream blusher in summer – I just think it looks more natural and it sticks around longer. This Maybelline dream blush in 06 is really good – a little bit goes a long way (aka it is quite easy to look like a clown) but it’s okay if you just pat it on and it blends in nicely and gives this really pretty, dewy look. I like putting a bit on my lips occasionally too. I’ve suddenly gone off lipstick but all month I’ve been wearing this Collection lipstick in ‘Tallulah’ – it’s just a baby pink colour. But in the last week I’ve just used my Paw Paw moisturising balm, which, to be honest, I put on everything. My skin has been so dry this month that I’ve even put it on my face.
My parents bought me an amazing UV nail gel set for my birthday so I can now do my own gels! I was scared I’d mess it up because I’m so rubbish at anything like that, but it’s actually pretty foolproof. I have two colours so far and my favourite is this plum colour – your nails look so glossy and pretty and they don’t chip for ages. Obsessed. I did do my toenails as well but then I realised they were really easy to peel off and I couldn’t stop myself, so that was pointless. I’ve bought a midnight blue too which I want to try soon.
Another birthday present from my too generous parents, the new Garnier shampoo and conditioner is just, like, my dream combination. The smell of coconuts is one of my favourite things in the world (I mentioned this little obsession here) and this stuff lingers in your hair for ages – it makes me feel like I’m wandering about on a tropical vacation. It’s also managed to make my hair feel really soft and full for the first time in ages. When I used this, I didn’t wash my hair afterwards for four whole days, which is unheard of. It’s good stuff! I’ve just had a haircut and as usual they took too much hair off, so I’m hoping this helps it grow out again quickly (what do you think of it?!)
My mum gave me these little owl candles for my birthday – aren’t they just the cutest things you’ve ever seen? I can’t burn them, I just can’t stand the idea of watching their little heads melt – so I’ve just put them strategically round my flat. Everywhere you go, there’s a little owl watching over you… I like it.
I’m in love with this satchel bag from River Island, which was a present from my sister. I think it looks so luxurious, in this cream buttery leather with its silk lining. It’s the perfect size to use every day, really easy to find things in because it has neat little compartments… I just love it! I find it hard with handbags because it’s like, it needs to be practical and look fairly professional but still be something I love. Somehow this manages to cover all bases.
Also, finally wearing flip flops again – my Mum bought me silver ones for my birthday, which are so cute, and my friend bought me amazing ones with shells that encircle your ankle. I love wearing shells, I don’t know why.
Only downside to the amount of fun I’ve been having this month is the fact that it has somewhat scuppered my healthy eating. I’ve mostly eaten far too much cake, and buttery bread, hot cross buns, Domino’s pizza…god, I love that garlic and herb dip… on the slightly healthier side, I’ve been drinking a lot of chocolate almond milk. The dark chocolate one literally tastes like a pudding. It can’t really be good for you, but it tastes incredible. Also, Lucky Charms aren’t THAT bad for you…right?
Masterchef was so, so good! Ping deserved to win, although I loved Luke and his quirky ways – I think I’d have enjoyed his food the most. I miss it…I feel like I haven’t watched TV in ages, for some reason. Oh, this weekend I watched HOURS of Friends. The one where Rachel had a baby made me cry, again. That show never, ever gets old. Apart from that I’ve just been watching old Popworld videos on Youtube – does anybody else think that show was unbeatable?
I’m sorry, I’m going to have to talk about the Arctic Monkeys again. I’ve been going on about this album for months and I’m still not over it. I swear, I haven’t loved one album like this since Robbie Williams ‘Sing When You’re Winning’ when I was 13! I just play it over and over and over…and obviously, seeing them live has made me start playing it again! Having said that, I’m getting excited for Glastonbury and listening to a lot of Black Keys (favourite song: Nova Baby) and The 1975 (favourite song: Sex). I’ve been trying to decide who I want to see most out of Jake Bugg and MGMT. It’s a stark choice. (I will NOT be at Metallica).
I don’t know why I’ve never included this category before when I love reading so much! This month I would recommend reading Liane Moriarty’s ‘What Alice Forgot,’ which weirdly made me cry a lot. Also ‘Sisterland’ by Curtis Sittenfeld, which is a strange book, but very good. Hmm, I might do a post on ‘books I’ve read lately’ soon.
My birthday – the day itself, and the weekend, were both so good; I felt so spoilt by my boyfriend and family and friends and all my presents were seriously amazing. Like this insanely cool clock my friend bought me, for example! Both bank holidays were really good fun, especially the BBQ. The weather getting better. Looking forward to an amazing summer, and sunsets from my balcony.
I was sick for a few days, which was pretty rubbish (although not that bad, to be honest!) Eating badly – I need to sort that out this month. I can’t think of anything else – it’s been such a good month!
Next month I have a hen do, a romantic weekend away with my boyfriend, Glastonbury, a week in Birmingham with work and one of my best friends’ birthdays to celebrate – I’m so excited for it all to start!
