The Dorchester Afternoon Tea Birthday Surprise!

As I’ve mentioned before on my blog, it doesn’t matter how old I get – I still love my birthday. I love being made a fuss of and having an excuse to have all my friends over! But the older I get, the more I value experiences, rather than material objects. I also LOVE surprises. So when my sister told me she was taking me out for my birthday but she wasn’t telling me where, I couldn’t wait!

She managed to keep the secret really well (despite my Dad’s best attempts at giving it away!) so I was really surprised, excited and happy when we meet at Green Park station and walked to the Dorchester! One of London’s most luxurious hotels, I’ve always wanted to go there ever since I saw it on TV as a child, so I couldn’t wait for their traditional afternoon tea.

The interior is so beautiful – you eat in the Promenade which is decorated with gorgeous flowers and dotted with little sofas and tables, a man playing piano in the background.

We started with tea – English breakfast for me, Dorchester blend for my sister. They pour it for you, which is a nice touch.

Then unlimited sandwiches! The five options were egg, cucumber, tuna, salmon and chicken. We had three more after these five and I was already quite full!

Next came a ‘palette cleanser.’ Imagine a mini Cornetto filled with chocolate and salted caramel. I’m not sure exactly what was palette cleansing about it, but it was incredible!

After this we ate two scones each laden with clotted cream and two different types of jam. There was no rush at all and we really took our time, chatting and people watching (there were some interesting types about!)

The cakes were lovely and the waiter gave us an extra two each, which really, we didn’t need…but we managed to eat, obviously!

The piano played ‘happy birthday’ occasionally and I casually remarked to my sister (whilst trying to check us in on Facebook) that they must know it was my birthday…

Then realised they did!

This was the icing on the cake (get it?!) of a beautiful day. I am so grateful to my little sister for spoiling me so much! I really recommend the Dorchester afternoon tea to anyone – it’s the best one I’ve ever had and I’m very sad it’s over!
