How to be British

*Sidenote: this post is not about British nationalism. Sorry, fans of Donald Trump/Nazis who got here by mistake. 

A work colleague of mine is helping his friend study for the British citizenship test. I was having a look at the questions and was baffled by how few of them I knew. For example – ‘What is the name of the admiral who died in a sea battle in 1805 and has a monument in Trafalgar Square?’ Erm – is that relevant?

And it got me thinking about what it means to be British, or rather, what I would define at Britishness. So here are the things I think you really need to know to prove you grew up in Britain:

On writing a book

Not sure where I’m going with this blogpost, so if you’re looking for something concise and to the point, you’re going to be disappointed – it’s a bit of a brain dump, bear with me…

Some of you may know, some of you may not know, that I’m trying to write a book. I say trying, because I’ve been trying now for years – I mean, literally, more than two years. Every New Year I say ‘I’m going to write a book this year.’ And every year, I don’t.

35 before 35 - a bucket list

So you may have noticed I've added a new page to my blog. My '35 before 35' is basically a little bucket list that I wrote around the end of last year, having seen it on someone else's blog (sorry, I've forgotten which one!) and it's basically just a little list of the things I'd like to accomplish in the next five and a half years...maybe some are more realistic than others!

I guess the reason I wanted to publish it today is because this weekend I had a house party which I felt meant I could tick off one of the items (it was great, I still haven't recovered, haha). And now I want to keep working towards the others and I'll try and write a post every time I do.

10 Friday Favs

 This week started with a tube strike, a run in the rain, a broken phone and the promise of snow…and yet somehow, I’ve had a great one. I’m just in such a good mood at the moment and I feel like this year better watch out because I’m so inspired to keep working towards my goals, having fun and generally enjoying life. I find it so difficult to admit out loud when I’m this happy because a.) I think it sounds smug and b.) I worry that somehow I’ll jinx it. But as my husband told me firmly this week, if I am ever sad in the future, I’m not going to look back and think ‘Oh, I was really happy back then, I wish I’d enjoyed it less!’ So on that note…

10 ways to OWN this new year

Ah, new year. On the one hand, it’s exciting, isn’t it? It’s that new-term feeling – sharp pencils and white pages, a clean slate, fresh avocados and new wardrobes - a chance to become one of those thin blonde people on Instagram who apparently get paid to do yoga poses on beaches. (No shade here - #dreamlife, you go huns). The trouble is, whilst Instagram-January is gorgeous and shiny and new, you may be noticing that IRL January is err – kind of crap, isn’t it? Less avocados on toast, more long, gloomy days at work, nobody wanting to go on nights out, everybody on a diet, no money, no wine, all the fairy lights put away, all the sparkle somehow gone. If you’re not careful you can spend the newest part of the new year feeling a bit sad and flat and grey, and you know what? That’s just a waste. So here are 10 tips to get you feeling like the best version of yourself this new year – both in January and beyond!

N.B. I have tried not to be patronising and state the obvious like ‘drink more water’ (yes okay, everyone should drink more water, but it tastes of nothing, and weeing at work every five minutes is really bloody annoying, and the last time I carried a water bottle I spilt it in my bag and ruined my favourite powder compact) or ‘eat more vegetables’ or anything else that will make you want to do an eye roll and say ‘Jesus, thanks Sherlock.’ But if I have, soz. Your girl tried. Onwards.

10 Friday Favourites

Ohhhh hi January. I feel like people are always in one of two camps this first week back – they’re either eating cut-price Quality Street in front of the TV, pretending it’s a Christmas special, begging everyone to get drunk with them and mourning the end of the festive season – or they’re secretly relieved by the return of salads, the gym, and the fact that they don’t have to drink any more prosecco. This year, for once, I fall into the latter camp. December was amazing but I basically went out every night for two weeks straight and I’m exhausted. I genuinely feel ready for fresh starts, new notebooks with blank pages, the gym, and hours spent lying on my sofa watching television. So my favourites this week are very much related to that!

New year goals

Happy 2017, everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful one. I personally (if not politically) had a great 2016 and in particular an amazing Christmas and New Year with all my friends and family. I know some people think New Year’s resolutions are stupid, or impossible to stick to, and they might be right, but I like them anyway. Any excuse for a fresh start is just fine by me – I like new diaries, blank pages, that feeling that anything is possible. What I don’t like is unrealistic goals, beating myself up for failing, or focusing on negatives, so I’ve tried to make my goals really positive and achievable whilst still challenging myself to work on self improvement.

Goals, not 'resolutions,' should be things that ultimately will make you happier. Please don't compare yourself to anything - an Instagram photo, a number on the scales - except your own happiness metre. Aim for little goals that make your world just a little lovelier to live in. Even if you just resolve to paint your nails on a Sunday night - whatever makes you smile that little bit more.
